AT THE FOUNTAIN

At the fountain
she fills a vase with water
And everyday inside
she places a flower
Never says hello and behind her shoulders
she hides a sad expression
An at a glance I see her smile
brittle in the water’s reflection

Will she speak to me?
Who is she?

she sings from the varanda
but she stays out of site
and as I stare
she disappears in the sun light
No one knows her name
no one knows her pain
I am wrapped in her mystery
But I am silent and afraid

So charming and sad
give me the power I’ve never had

I close my eyes
And we stand together
Falling in love in a dream forever
One word unspoken
My curse would have broken

I wake up rehearsing
all the right things to say
But when you are near
my courage falls and breaks

Could you love me?
But you mourn in black
for someone else

One morning by the fountain
I saw you there
The vase spilled the water
and the flower laid by your hair
I held your cold hands
motionless and then I knew
I read the letter you left behind
For someone else I assumed
it read

I will always love you
though you’ll never know
I lost the struggle to the sorrow
but keep my name wherever you go
signed

I close my eyes
And we stand together
Falling in love in a dream forever
One word unspoken
And my curse
would have broken
I’ll never know your name
But I will never be the same
There will be no other
the day you died
you became my true lover
